Forget the novel! Today I have some great news!
Walking the English Coast: a Beginner’s Guide, is published.
At long last, you might say. And it does seem I’ve been working on it for ages.
The book is now available as a glossy paperback, published with the help of I_AM publishing, who have been working patiently with me for many months.
- It’s 246 pages long
- Contains over 30 photos and illustrations
- A chunky 7″ x 10″ size (18cm x 25cm approx.)
- And costs a mere GBP 14.99 (USD 32.99)
Amazon’s POD costs turned out to be far too high for colour printing – over GBP 25. So Walking the English Coast is printed and distributed via Ingram. This means it shows up on Amazon UK as ‘Out of Stock’.
In a few days time I’ll be selling Walking the English Coast on Amazon, as a re-seller, and signed copies will be available!
Fiction Novel: The Reluctant Scribe
With my full attention on Walking the English Coast , I’m not making much progress with my main project. I don’t think August is a good month to be searching for an agent and I’m waiting for September to come (that might just be an excuse but I’m sticking with it.)
Collection of short stories: The Shed
I’m currently putting together a collection of four short stories. Two of the stories were previously published in magazines, and one of them – The Shed – won first prize in a competition.
I’ve just received the manuscript back from my editor, and need to work through her suggestions.
In the meantime, I’ve commissioned the very talented illustrator, Lizzi Wakelin, to produce some black and white illustrations – one for each story. I’m dying to see what she comes up with.
The Orbital Contract – (draft YA sci-fi novel):
The printed copy of the first draft is still waiting for some attention. Hopefully I’ll have more progress to report on this next month.
Other writing projects
Last month I reported I had a very short non-fiction piece published in the August issue of BBC Countryfile Magazine. A longer piece, about my experience of walking the coast, should appear in the next few months.

August has been a tough month for me, too. I’ve submitted some, but feel that my current project might be more marketable… if I can ever finish it!🙂

Submitting is a frustrating process, which is why I decided to self-pub the coastal walking book – with the help of editors and designers. Otherwise it might never be published. Good luck with your current project Jen.

Hi Maria. Yes, immense satisfaction. And it’s really wonderful to hold the proof copy and see how good it looks. Sales? Bit of a niche market, so not expecting many. But at least it’s out there.
