January update: 5 year writing project

I’m working on my Walking the English Coast non-fiction book. Not sure if I’m ever truly happy with anything I write.

do you have goalsI’m taking part in Misha and Beth’s Five Year Project and my five-year goal is to write a novel and get it published.

It’s two years since I joined the project and, although I have finished my novel, The Reluctant Scribe, I’m still collecting rejections from agents.

5 year writing goal: November update

My quest for an agent for my historical novel, The Reluctant Scribe, continues. I’ve written to eight so far, with six polite rejections and two still pending.
Meanwhile, I’m moving on. From the past and into the future…

My quest for an agent for my historical novel, The Reluctant Scribe, continues. I’ve written to eight so far, with six polite rejections and two still pending.

In the meantime, I’m moving on with my next novel. It’s completely different in tone and style. This time it’s a fast-paced, sci-fi adventure, written in the first person, present tense, and aimed at the young adult reader. Continue reading “5 year writing goal: November update”

Success: I’ve had a short story published!

After several posts in which I describe my stressful – and fruitless – search for an agent, it gives me great pleasure to celebrate a small success with you.

Last month I was lucky enough to have a short story published in 44 Square, the annual journal of new fiction, published by Birkbeck, University of London.

44 Square Journal CoverYou can read my story, along with all the other included pieces, by downloading a PDF of the anthology. It’s free!

The journal features some excellent work from a bunch of talented writers, and I feel honoured that my short story, Letter to Oliver, was selected for publication. This is the second time I’ve had a short story selected for the 44 Square journal. Once was wonderful, but to be accepted twice represents a huge achievement for me.

(I also had some poetry accepted in another journal, but I’ll tell you all about that in another post.)

5 Year Writing Goal: March update

do you have goalsI’m taking part in Misha and Beth’s Five Year Project and my five-year goal is to write a novel and get it published.

This is my update on progress this month with my historical novel, The Reluctant Scribe.

After the last piece of very helpful advice from an experienced reviewer, I have completed the following changes:

  • Inserted some introspective reflection to clearly explain my main protagonist’s final actions.
  • Rewritten the ending to include a very satisfactory revenge scene, where the main villain gets his just reward.
  • Inserted a prologue in order to set the context of the story for my reader.
