Getting down to writing – not!

pencils on padMy Birkbeck term ended a few weeks ago. I planned to use the free evenings (Monday and Wednesday were ‘school’ evenings) to write, write and write some more – no longer do I have the distractions of assignments, prescribed reading, etc.

What have I done since the end of term?

I have done the following:

  • Read several novels, some novellas and a collection of short stories.
  • Blogged about some, but not all, of the above reading on my blog Ruthless Readings.
  • Moved my reading blog from Blogger to Word Press. (my old site is still there http://www.ruthlivingstone.blogspot.co.uk/).
  • Spent ages making my new reading blog look pretty.
  • Went away on two walking weekends and worked hard to catch up with my Coastal Walk blog.
  • Did some travelling for work – Ascot, London, Taunton, Leicester, Newcastle and Milton Keynes.
  • Felt guilty because I haven’t written anything for my Olympic Storyteller site recently.
  • Watched football Euro 2012 and then watched Wimbledon.
  • Thought about my forthcoming holidays and booked flight tickets.
  • and……

You see, life is just so full of – well, full of – just full of – life is full of events, I suppose.

Next week, I promise I will get down to writing. Hang on, I’m going to Northampton on Tuesday, Bromsgrove on Wednesday, possibly Heathrow on Thursday … well, definitely by the end of the week then. Let me check – what about next weekend? No – I’m off walking again!

  1. Hi Ruth,
To be a good writer you have to be a good reader first. Someone else said that, but I’m adopting it as my phrase. I too have periods when I need to read, then it feeds the writing brain with new words and phrases, and helps you find your voice. Good luck.

  2. I can’t believe how much you have got done in only a few weeks. I wouldn’t worry about what is past, however perhaps you do need to set yourself a date, and a time when you will write. Otherwise you might find yourself adrift, which is what happened to me.

It has taken me a while to step up to the mark again, however I do feel the change did me good.

    Keep the faith!

  3. You sound so like me. I want to write but always something gets in the way. At the moment it’s wedding presents (hand-made naturally). The one next summer is encouraging me to try out a few new patterns, but can’t decide which one I like best, so I move to Christmas presents for a bit and then want to take some photos, then need to go to the library and then there’s work, of course … Cardiff on Monday … and on and on it goes – can’t wait to retire! but that’s not for at least 10 years yet. I hope the novel gets written before then!
